Tips from a photographer who has seen all kinds of proposals! 

There is something so incredible about photographing a proposal. Its real, raw, full of beautiful, love filled energy. 

When it comes to planning the perfect proposal, there are no rules! And in my opinion, that’s the best part. You get to write the story that will be told as the beginning of your forever. But, if you are looking for a little guidance, here are a few things to consider while planning your perfect moment. 

Picking a Location That Feels Like You

The perfect proposal location doesn’t have to be elaborate or grand. It just has to feel meaningful.

Some couples choose:

• The spot where they had their first date
• The place they first met
• A favorite hiking trail
• A coffee shop that became “their place”
• A destination they’ve always loved together

And sometimes – it’s simply somewhere beautiful that feels like the perfect space for a new beginning.

A great example that I had the honor of capturing was this proposal at The Stanley Hotel. This was chosen not just because it’s stunning, but because they both love history, and are huge fans of Stephen King. (In case you’re unfamiliar, this is the hotel that inspired “The Shining.”)

This space reflected their shared interests. That’s what made it perfect. 

So whether it’s a regularly visited mountain trail, or your quiet backyard – choose somewhere that feels like a piece of your story.

Choosing the Right Date

The date can matter as much or as little as you want it to. 

Some couples love the symbolism of:

• Their anniversary
• The day they met
• A favorite shared holiday

There’s no wrong choice. Just think about whether you want something meaningful, surprising, or both.

An Important Tip (From a Photographer’s Perspective)

If having the moment documented matters to you, timing is important.

Engagement season tends to align with:

• Fall color season
• Winter holidays
• Early summer mountain sessions
